SISD board approves increased safety measures, including body cameras for its police force

EL PASO, Texas – The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees held a meeting Tuesday where they approved increased school safety measures including the purchase of 54 body cameras for SISD police.

According to the SISD agenda, the Body Worn Cameras Grant Program and Resolution would provide funding for the SISD Police Department to purchase 54 body cameras with mounts and installation equipment through the Criminal Justice Division.

Some other safety measures the district voted to approve is the submission of grant applications for SISD Police Department to obtain bullet-resistant shields. The shields have the capability to stop and deflect handguns and rifles. They would be accessible to all responding police officers for active-shooter situations. The objective is to assign a bullet-resistant shield at each of the SISD high schools.

The board will also passed a motion to approve implementation of a clear bag policy for all athletic events, to enhance the safety and security of guests and participants. This policy will also look to expedite entry to facilities.

Starting at the Socorro Activities Complex and eventually making its way to all high schools. Officials said parents would be notified before it is implemented.

Law Enforcement Agencies was also recognized for partnering with SISD Police to ensure the safety of students and staff during a recent emergency lockdown at Socorro High School after reports of a person with a gun on campus.

If SISD receives the grant from the state, officials said the implementation of these measures will slowly begin to take place.
