Food pantry at the Juarez cathedral feeds hundreds of migrants in need

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- A food pantry set up inside of the Juarez cathedral in Downtown Juarez helps migrants in need almost every day of the week.

Volunteers and other people that work there feed around 600 migrants per day.

This project started four years ago. It didn't start as a food pantry. The cathedral offers different services to migrants, like guiding them to shelters, giving them some food and supplies, and providing them with legal advice.

The current food pantry started back in October of 2022 when there was a rise in Venezuelan migrants coming to the Borderland.

It functions because of the volunteers and people who donate food there.

Iliana Sorto is the volunteer in charge of the food pantry. She's also a migrant who arrived here back in 2019. She is from El Salvador, she lives here with her seven-year-old child.

Now she wants to help more migrants because she knows the need and assistance they need from the border community.

If you would like to donate you can contact the Columban Mission Center at 816 Magoffin Ave, El Paso, TX 79901.

People are also welcome to drop off their donations at the center on Tuesday, Feb 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or also email the center at cmc@columban.org.

Another way to donate in Juarez is to contact Cristina Coronado, the dining room coordinator. Her phone number is +52 (656)-321-3351.
