EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso police have arrested 21-yer-old Brandon Mendoza after a shooting at a bar in the Cincinnati Entertainment District May 12, 2023.

Court documents newly obtained by ABC-7 state Mendoza kicked 24-year-old Juan Rojas's head after Rojas was shot by another suspect. Police have not yet named that second suspect.

According to the court documents, Rojas told investigators he arrived at the bar with a large group of people. He says the people in his group started to argue with another group of people. Rojas told investigators he knew a few of the people in the other group, including the two suspects. Court documents state he told investigators the two suspects associate with gang members.

Officials say officers with the gang unit responded to reports of shots fired. Investigators learned the fight started inside the bar. Those involved in the fight were removed by security, according to a spokesperson. Police say those involved continued to fight in a back alley.

Rojas says he was shot in the leg by the other suspect, then told investigators Mendoza ran up to him and kicked his head.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. outside a bar on the 2700 block of North Mesa Street, according to the El Paso Police Department.

Mendoza appeared for a bond hearing Thursday morning. The judge chose to reduce his bond.

Rojas was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Court documents state he was shot in the leg.

Police say Mendoza is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
