Woman accused of murdering El Paso Uber driver released on bond

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The woman charged with the murder of an El Paso Uber driver was released on a $500,000 split bond August 16, 2023, according to jail records.

El Paso Police say 48-year-old Phoebe Copas shot and killed the driver, 52-year-old Daniel Piedra, on June 16, 2023. Copas told police she thought Piedra was trying to kidnap her and bring her to Mexico after she saw highway signs indicating an exit to Juarez. The shooting happened on an overpass near US-54 and Loop 375.

At a June 29 bond hearing, a judge decided to keep Copas' $1.5 million bond in effect, with a $500,000 surety bond and $1 million personal reconnaissance bond. A second bond hearing happened the same day Copas was released from jail. ABC-7 is working to find out whether Copas' bond was reduced during that second hearing.
