EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Thousands attended the 2nd annual El Paso science festival this weekend. Organizers say the festival's goal is to inspire youth, spark curiosity and interest in science and engineering.

Astronaut José Hernández spoke with ABC-7 about what inspired him to get involved in science. "It's very important that we have role models. My role model was someone, named Gene Cernan. The very last man walked on the moon. I was ten years old when I saw him walk on the moon. And when I saw him talk to mission control Houston. I said, I want to be an Astronaut," Hernández said.

Hernández was selected in 2004 to be part of the 19th class of NASA astronauts. He trained for two years before he was eligible for his first flight assignment. Armed with his father's 5 ingredient recipe for success Hernández was well on his way.

"Determine your purpose in life, Recognize how far you are, draw yourself roadmap so you know how to get there, prepare yourself according to the challenge and develop a work ethic that's second to none," Hernández said.
