LIBBY (KPAX TV) — One woman and seven dogs died in a weekend mobile home fire in Libby.
Libby Fire Marshall Steve Lauer says emergency crews responded to a mobile home fire at around 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Kootenai Vista Trailer Court off of Kootenai River Road.
Lauer says a neighbor noticed the door to the mobile home was open and attempted to enter the home to help. Lauer said the flames and smoke were so heavy the neighbors couldn’t enter the home.
Lauer told MTN News that when crews arrived at the scene about 25% of the mobile home was engulfed in flames.
An engine crew attempted to enter the home through the front door but the blaze had burned large holes into the floor so they couldn’t enter the structure.
Lauer says crews were able to get into the home through another entrance toward the back of the structure to search for a potential occupant but were unable to locate anyone.
It took about 90 minutes for firefighters to knock down the fire and the victim was later found in the kitchen area.
Lauer says the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
