FREMONT, Nebraska (KETV) — A community is in shock and a family is in mourning after a four-month-old was stabbed to death. Police say her cousin, 19-year-old Alexander Hernandez killed her.

“The baby was actually born in Chicago, I believe. There was some difficulties there with a family so the Hernandez family here in Fremont agreed to take the baby in,” Fremont police Lt. Ed Watts said.

Watts said Herandez would not speak to investigators.

“Another resident in the house actually wrestled the knife away from the suspect and then he was taken into custody after our officers arrived,” Watts said.

The next-door neighbors of the family say their grandchildren used to play with Hernandez. Like most of the neighborhood, they say they did not see this coming.

“Love your neighbor as you love yourself” is a message that retired minister Larry Steel is used to teaching, and now has to follow quite literally.

“Who can plan for something like this? And when it happens… how willing are we to help one another?” Steel said.

Steel said he’s been mourning with his neighbors since Friday.

“Prior to officers arriving, they learned that there was an individual in the house that was armed with a knife and had actually been seen by another resident stabbing the four-month-old,” Watts said.

Now, along with the rest of the community, Watts and Steel are waiting to find out why someone would do this.

“How well do you really know your children, what they’re going through up in this area?” Steel said.
