Ports of entry to see an increase in inspections after the recent migrant surge

EL PASO, Texas -- The migrant surge is causing concerns for authorities. In the past few days, the international ports of entry have seen an increase in wait times.

In a city news conference on Tuesday Deputy City Manager Mario D'Agostino said the city has had conversations with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and was told that they are reassigning agents from ports of entry and moving them to help process the growing number of migrants coming into the U.S.

Additionally, Texas DPS said they started to conduct their "Enhanced Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspections" at the Ports of Entry along the Texas border.

This is set to affect all means of transportation, cargo, pedestrian, and regular traffic.

What this means is that people coming from Juarez will see an increase in lines, which has already been happening.

Back in April, Texas Governor Greg Abbott increased inspections at the border, we saw lines of trucks stuck at the ports of entry.

This will add more wait times at the bridges because more lanes will be closed.

El Paso Deputy City Manager says this will have a negative impact across the borderland.

"What that's going to do is that's going to pull the resources they currently have at the other bridges to do cargo checks. That's going to pull them away from there, so we will see a delay, a possible delay in cargo that's going through," Deputy City Manager D'Agostino said.

Now CBP officers will be processing migrants at the Paso del Norte bridge and they will be released at the very same port of entry.
