Amarillo man was pedestrian hit, killed in El Paso rail yard
UPDATE, July 29: El Paso police on Thursday identified the man struck and killed by a train earlier this week near the Union Pacific Railroad Yard.
The victim was 42-year-old Alejandro Dimas of Amarillo, Texas.
Police, however, didn't provide any further details surrounding his death - or indicate why the Amarillo man was in the train yard.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have noted that Dimas wasn't connected to a roundup of migrants that its agents were conducting on the train when they spotted Dimas' body.
ORIGINAL REPORT, July 27: EL PASO, Texas -- A train struck and killed a man Monday night along the Border Highway at mile-marker 17 in the downtown area, according to El Paso police.
Traffic investigators were summoned about 11:30 p.m. to the deadly incident scene at the Union Pacific Railroad Yard, near Loop 375 and S. Stanton Street.
The man - identified by police as a 42-year-old U.S. citizen - died at the scene after being hit by the 64-car train; fire dispatchers indicated medical services were never requested.
"Border Patrol Agents were looking for illegal immigrants on the train. Agents located three individuals on the train and later came across an individual underneath the train who died after being struck by the train," police wrote in an incident report released Tuesday morning.
Customs and Border Protection officials have reported numerous prior incidents this year involving migrants being injured while trying to jump onto moving trains to travel into the U.S.
ABC-7 Xtra took an in-depth look at this dangerous border train problem back in May, with CBP officials saying that many migrants unfamiliar with the lay of the land were getting hurt around trains in the Borderland and beyond.
