Caring for El Paso’s vulnerable as the weather gets colder

EL PASO, Texas -- For some, colder weather is an excuse to break out the winter coat or spend a cozy day indoors. For those sleeping on the streets, colder temperatures can be dangerous.

The Opportunity Center for the Homeless is reminding the public that their shelters have an open door policy. There are no screening or eligibility guidelines that would prevent someone from being able to seek shelter.

"Homelessness is a reality, it's a cycle," said John Martin, the Deputy Director of the Opportunity Center. "Many of us are just one paycheck away from being homeless, so we have to develop the resources and systems available to assist our neighbors within this community."

Once a homeless individual is at the shelter, the center can help them find a job or receive medical care.

"The intent is to bring them in, get them something to eat," Martin said. "We do provide three meals a day, keep them warm, keep them healthy and more importantly, keep them alive."

The shelters are always seeking financial donations and clothing donations, particularly winter coats, gloves and hats.

For more information about making a donation or volunteering, or if you have a question about accessing the shelter as a homeless individual, you can call 915-577-0069.
