Update (1:34 PM): Immigration activist and Estrella del Paso Executive Director Melissa M. Lopez released the following statement on the presidential election results:
"The election results are in, and we now must prepare for the onslaught that our clients and community will face in the next four years. We saw firsthand the devastating impact of the first Trump Administration – numerous attempts to close the border, dismantling of the refugee system, limits on the due process rights of our clients. The list goes on and on. Our work during the first Administration gives us a sense of what we can expect during a second administration. We are preparing ourselves for another attack on immigrants. I am concerned about our clients and community, but even more concerning to me is ensuring the health of our team. I am committed to providing the space, resources, and support needed to ensure our team is prepared to fight for our clients and our community. We have heard promises of mass deportations, up to one million per day, that would separate families, destroy our local economies, and desolate our schools, churches, and communities.
Despite this expected assault on immigrants, Estrella Del Paso will continue to do what is at the core of our mission, and that is to uphold the rule of law by providing immigration legal services, advocacy, and community outreach to protect immigrants’ rights and advance justice in the spirit of the Gospel. While we will do our best to remain hopeful, we can guarantee that we are committed to remaining in this fight for the next four years, and to do everything in our power to protect immigrants and to protect our communities."
Estrella del Paso Executive Director Melissa M. Lopez
Update (1:05 PM): County Commissioner David Stout released the following statement regarding the results of the vote on the UMC bond last night.
"First and foremost, I thank the voters for supporting the UMC bond and three of the five County bond proposals. I also want to thank UMC’s dedicated staff, and our County team, for their hard work in informing the public about the bond proposals.
UMC will be able to continue offering excellent service to our community, including cancer treatment, reducing the need for people to seek help elsewhere. And, UMC’s focus on older adult/geriatric persons is of critical importance as El Paso’s senior population continues to grow. At the County, we are very excited about the parks upgrades, especially those at Ascarate, and are happy the voters saw the need for public health and safety upgrades by supporting the medical examiner and animal shelter.
I am disappointed that not all our proposals passed, especially for efforts such as the Corbin Sambrano center, a community led project that could transform an underserved area. We also missed a chance to expand the ability to serve our elders better with a new senior nutrition kitchen.
And of course, there is the Coliseum, which narrowly lost – by less than 1 percent. This historic, multi-faceted installation that not only provides diverse entertainment, from concerts for thousands to community events large and small for associations, non-profits and others. The Coliseum is overdue for attention, especially now that it is no longer going to be needed by the federal government for the Bridge of the Americans port expansion. The Coliseum and its campus is paid for and fully owned, accessible from all parts of town, and can maintain its position as a regional attraction at a fraction of the cost of a new facility. The close margin tells me that there is support and that we just need to work harder to tell its story and ensure that the Coliseum continues to be a huge community asset for many years into the future."
Commissioner David Stout

“Tonight’s victory belongs to every New Mexican who shares our belief that we can build a better, brighter future for our people. But even as we take in this moment, we know that our work is far from over. This election was about much more than any one campaign or candidate. It was about the future we’re building together for New Mexico.
This campaign has been about fighting for a future of freedom, opportunity, and progress. A future where good-paying jobs are available in every community, where every family has access to affordable health care, where children feel safe in their classrooms, where our lands and waters are protected for future generations, and where every woman has the right to make her own decisions about what happens to her body.
This election was about standing up for the values that unite us and rejecting the politics of division and fear. And tonight, the people of New Mexico sent a clear message that they want a future built on freedom, opportunity, and hope. As we look ahead, I’m energized by the chance to continue working with all of you to tackle the challenges we face. In the Senate, we have a lot to do to build on what we’ve accomplished, and to safeguard the progress we’ve made.
The stakes are too high for us to rest on past victories. Whether it’s defending women’s rights, combating climate change, bringing down costs on prescriptions drugs and energy, protecting our Social Security and Medicare, addressing the fentanyl crisis, or ensuring every child in New Mexico has access to a quality education, there is still so much more we can, and must, accomplish.
Tonight, we celebrate, but tomorrow, the hard work continues. Thank you again, New Mexico. Thank you for standing by me, for putting your faith and trust in me, and for believing in our shared vision. I am honored, humbled, and ready to keep fighting for our future.”Senator Martin Heinrich
