Texas wildfire smoke moving through Borderland, causing low visibility

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- ABC-7 has received several calls about the smell of smoke and hazy weather throughout El Paso County Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso via Twitter, visibilities across the eastside of El Paso have dropped down to four miles due to smoke.

They state the smoke originated from the wildfires that have been impacting the Texas Panhandle vicinity the past few days and it may impact vulnerable populations.

The Office of Emergency Management provided the follow tips during these conditions:

Here’s some advice we would like to provide the community:

  • If air quality is compromised outside, seek cleaner air spaces inside.

Public places such as libraries, community centres and shopping malls often have large air filtration systems and relatively good indoor air quality. Consider them as good places to spend some time during bad air quality advisories.

  • Consider wearing a protective mask.

Although a well fitted N95 will be the best option, face covers with multiple layers can reduce exposure to hazardous particles in the air.

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.

Limit outdoor exercise when it is smoky outside or choose lower-intensity activities to reduce smoke exposure.

  • Be cautious when driving

Visibility is currently reduced to 4miles in our region. Make sure you stay within the speed limits, keep focus on the road and turn on your headlights for added safety.

They add to check on your family, friends, and neighbors in our vulnerable populations as the smoke may cause increased health concerns.
