EL PASO, Texas - Returning to the Borderland from the Beltway, U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar of El Paso addressed the historic impeachment trial at her monthly town hall meeting.

"It was not a surprise - I'm talking about the outcome," Escobar told ABC-7 on Saturday. "I knew that there were senators who are from very tough districts for whom it would be a very difficult decision."

Escobar said certain lawmakers have constituents "who are strongly supportive of the presidents at any cost."

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate found President Donald Trump not guilty on both articles of impeachment.

"We saw senators who essentially said, 'We know that the president did it,'" Escobar said. "We had some senators saying, 'We don't need witnesses or evidence because we know he did it.' So they acknowledged that he violated his oath."

President Trump continued to defend his innocence at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.

"As everybody knows, my family, our great country and your president have been put through a terrible ordeal by some very dishonest and corrupt people," he said.
