UTEP Softball wins home finale vs. Utah Valley
EL PASO, Texas - Any time you can end your home season on a winning note, it's a good feeling. UTEP softball is feeling that way after a 10-9 victory over non-conference opponent Utah Valley Sunday.
Miners' sophomore catcher Karina Somoza had a career-best five RBIs in the second multi-hit game of her career, including her first career home run to set the pace.
"I thought we had some good offensive performances in the first half of the game, giving ourselves an opportunity to be up 9-1," head coach T.J Hubbard said. Hubbard was hired as UTEP's softball coach from Utah Valley in 2019.
Isabella Kelly tossed four innings and allowed only one unearned run to start the game.
However, the Wolverines began chipping away at the Miner lead with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Junior infielder Kasey Flores answered in the bottom of the sixth with what turned out to be a much-needed insurance run coming in the form of a solo homer to left field, 10-5. Flores now leads the team with seven home runs and 21 RBIs.
UTEP softball (10-23, 4-12 C-USA) now heads to San Antonio from May 7-9 to face UTSA (11-29, 5-11 C-USA) with playoff implications on the line for its final regular-season road series of the year.
The Miners must win three of four from the Roadrunners if they want any hope of qualifying for the Conference USA Tournament.
