El Paso fitness trainer offers tips for sticking to workout resolutions
EL PASO, Texas -- It's not atypical to see large crowds joining gyms in the first month of the new year. A 'New Year, New Me' mentality leads many to set new fitness resolutions. Not all of those resolutions last.
One El Paso-based Planet Fitness trainer, Josh Montes, says it's tough for people just starting the fitness journeys to find accountability. Plus, he says many try to dive in too fast.
"You're going to see a huge spike in gym members, however don't be afraid of coming in because everybody is in the same boat right now," Montes said. "Everyone is starting out so the person you're working out next to is probably in the same boat"
Montes recommends making small changes over time.
"My recommendation would be to start off small, come into the gym, workout for maybe 10 minutes," Montes said. "Tomorrow come in maybe 10 and a half minutes, maybe 11 minutes."
Montes says he typically sees beginners working out without using the proper form, which can be dangerous. He recommends seeking out a trainer to check your form before diving in to a new routine.
As for staying accountable, Montes recommends bringing a friend to the gym too.
"My recommendation is find a workout partner or an accountability partner, choosing someone whose already a regular at the gym so that way they can show you the ropes, making sure that you're doing exercises properly," Montes said.
