Texas Tech Health Sciences Center celebrates ‘Nurses’ Week’ with free meals for healthcare workers

EL PASO, Texas -- Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is celebrating Nurses' Week from May 6 to May 12. It's something Dr. Stephanie Woods, Dean of the Hunt School of Nursing, says could not come at a better time.

"We're hearing of the sacrifices they are making and the fear they have of their own personal safety," Dr. Woods said.

Celebrations included a donation of 500 meals for healthcare workers courtesy of Bruce and Jackie Gulbas. Meal delivery began Thursday morning at UMC and El Paso Children's Hospital and continues Friday at The Hospitals of Providence at Transmountain.

Other events include a "card my yard" project that includes signage outside local hospitals. The signs read, "Nurses Rock!" and will be displayed through May 12.

"What nurses do in any time of crisis is we show up," said Dr. Woods. "They are there taking care of these patients who cannot have visitors, who are critically ill."
