How vector control is fighting mosquito season in Doña Ana County

RADIUM SPRINGS, New Mexico -- Vector Control technicians are working to maintain the number of hatching mosquitos as the area north of Radium Springs has become overflowed with river water.

The flooding comes as a result of the monsoon season. More water in the area means more mosquitos. That includes amasses of mosquito larva in the river.

Vector technicians are putting granules into the river that prevent the larva from developing past the larva stage. The more mosquitos that are killed in the water, the less that can hatch and bite. This is one preliminary technique to prevent diseases carried by mosquitos.

Tips on preventing mosquitos include turning over and draining any plastic items such as children's toys that can collect water, and considering getting gambusia minnows or 'mosquito fish' that help kill mosquitos. Doña Ana County Vector Control is offering free gambusia minnows.
