12-year-old El Paso scientists turning head with groundbreaking research
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Paso 12-year old scientist's research is turning heads.
Our Good Vibes Only moment this Friday is brought to us by Chloe Svetlana Fierro, a 6th grade home school student who was recently recognized as one of the top 30 scholars in the nation.
She presented research showing that cork is a potential insulation material for buildings.
She got the idea when she studied a cork tree, and learned that cork is fire and insect resistant, and it's a renewable resource.
"Energy consumption, green house gas pollution, are all topics we've all become very familiar with," Fierro told ABC-7. "Cork insulation can make a huge impact, but there's [so] much performance available data collected through this experiment... to draw attention to this important building material."
As a finalist in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, Fierro received $1,000, which she is donating to Insights Science Discovery to help other young minds in El Paso.
In her spare time, Fierro is just like other kids her age. She enjoys playing the cello and baking. She wants to be a scientist when she grows up, and it looks like she is on the right path.
