The work-from-anywhere approach Americans have been benefiting from since 2020 has dropped off in the last few years, as major employers push returning to the office. Still, nearly a quarter of workers signed on remotely for at least a few days in February 2024, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Less frequency in an office, along with high housing costs, have caused some to rethink their living situation and expand their home searches beyond the suburbs. While fewer Americans moved in 2022, according to the latest Census data, of those who did, 1 in 5 moved to a different state.
To see where Americans have been moving lately, Stacker analyzed the Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey data to determine the three most popular destinations for people moving out of each state.
Population growth has largely returned to pre-pandemic norms; Southern states continued to record influxes in population, adding over 1.4 million residents from 2022 to 2023. The Sun Belt region—home to sunny states like Florida, Texas, South Carolina, and Arizona—saw an influx of people seeking warmer weather, lower taxes, and cheaper living long before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Lower housing prices have also become a draw in the Midwest, which gained about 126,000 residents following two years of declines. Meanwhile, the Northeast saw the biggest drops, particularly in New York and Pennsylvania. These trends largely continued into last year, according to United Van Lines’ annual movers study. States with the most outbound moves in 2023 include New Jersey, Illinois, North Dakota, and New York.
Read on to learn where Americans in each state are picking up and moving to most.
