7-Listens: Confusing Stoplights Mix-Up Motorists In Northeast

By Ashlie Hardway

EL PASO — An ABC-7 viewer described herfear at other drivers’ confusionat the intersection of Dyer and McCombs in Northeast El Paso.

Jaclyn Kovach described her most recent experiences at the stoplight. “I have almost been hit four times in the last three weeks at this intersection when the opposite lanes think they have the green light.”

Arguably one of the most confusing intersections in El Paso, the various stoplight posts are placed at oddly criss-crossed streets. For many drivers, the placement of the lights makes for confusion, and confusion makes for danger.

“When the light turns green, I’ve been almost going, and the cars are coming this way,” said Kimberly Sands, a driver who spoke with ABC-7. The stoplight posts are only feet apart, facing in similar directions; one for trafficon McCombscrossing Dyer street, the other, for the traffic on Dyer.

Ironically, and somewhat fatefully, while ABC-7 was on the scene, a motorist headed south on Dyer collided with the vehicle in front of it. But while some drivers may be confused, others said it’s better than not having the lights at all.

“I’ve been here 35 years and I’m glad to see them do it… There’s too many accidents here,” said Cleve Doyle, another driver who spoke with ABC-7.
