El Paso Roads Make Most-Congested List
By ABC-7 Reporter Martin Bartlett
EL PASO — The Texas Department of Transportation has released its list of the 100 most congested stretches of road in the Lone Star State.
Two Eastside roads made the list.
Interstate 10 between U.S. 54 and Joe Battle Boulevard is ranked as the 59th most congested road in the state.
Lee Trevino Drive between Montana Avenue and I-10 is ranked as the 98th.
The list actually quantifies the cumulative effect of congestion on commuters and the Texas economy.
TxDOT estimates congestion on that stretch of I-10 costs commuters $15.85 million in lost productivity and 763,389 hours in lost time every year.
If planned upgrades to I-10 aren’t made, TxDOT estimates that those costs would skyrocket to $108.11 million annually and 5,207,415 lost hours.
They say the drive, which takes 24 minutes during rush hour, would climb to 37 minutes at peak times.
Drivers on Lee Trevino lose a total of 208,363 hours to their commute and $4.33 million each year, according to the TxDOT study.
The site indicates there are no plans to make major upgrades to Lee Trevino.
Drivers in Houston and Dallas must endure the must congested commutes in Texas.
I-45 between Beltway 8 and I-610 in Houston is the most congested stretch of highway in the state. Drivers there sacrifice nearly half a million hours to their commute every year.
