Permaculture Group To Convert Vacant Lot Into Urban Food Forest

A movement modestly planted on Facebook last year received city approval on May 22 to set real-life roots of sorts in El Paso?s San Francisco Heights district.

City Council unanimously approved a plan that will lead to the conversion of a 10,000-square-foot empty lot behind City Hall, at 631 W. Franklin Ave., into a food forest that will grow native plants. The site will also serve as a hub offering education on gardening, basketry, pottery, harvesting and renewable energy.

?Downtown is currently under major changes,? said Diana Diaz, who works for the Planning and Economic Development Department for the City of El Paso. ?Bringing these types of projects to the downtown area will attract more visitors and spur more economic development into the area.?
