Bullet hits fan at NMSU game

A woman is now recuperating from a gunshot wound to the leg, and New Mexico State Universitypolice are on the hunt for a shooter.

It all took place at Aggie Memorial Stadium, where nearly 25,000 people were in attendance.

The random shooting has left a lot of football fans and NMSU students in shock.

Tyler Chavez, NMSU student,tells ABC-7, “It’s a crazy occurrence, I’ve never heard of that happening.”

“I’ve been to this stadium a million times, and for something like that to happen to a woman randomly, It’s pretty scary,” said NMSU student Kristoffer Keorper.

NMSUstudents can’t get over the news of a women receiving a gunshot wound to her leg.

NMSU Deputy Police Chief, Andy Bowentells ABC-7they quickly assessed the scene. “We were able to establish by all the witnesses and bystanders, that there did not appear to be any sign of gunshot in the stadium.”

Bowensaid by the injury and trajectory of the bullet, they established the bullet came from outside the stadium, from a shot fired into the air.

The woman was taken to University Medical Center, where she was treated for her wound.

But why wasn’t the game stopped?Bowen said it was actually safer to keep everyone inside.

“We didn’t want to have people go or have most of the people outside the stadium, so that’s why the game wasn’t stopped and the people weren’t evacuated,” said Bowen.

Now NMSUplans to beef up their security.

“We are going to start spreading our efforts further out and focusing on heavier patrols outside their stadium as well as inside,” saidBowen.

Police officials tell ABC-7 that the woman is now out of the hospital. She is doing well and her name will be released Monday.
