Community steps up to help Animal Rescue League of El Paso
Thieves targeted some of El Paso’s most vulnerable–shelter animals. The Animal Rescue League in the Upper Valley has been struggling to overcome a series of break-ins, but the community response has been even more overwhelming.
The non-profit was broken into three times in recent months, with the thieves getting bolder with each strike.
“Shame on you. I mean why, why would you… How desperate do you have to be? What kind of person takes from animals that have nothing,” Loretta Hyde, the rescue league’s kennel manager, said.
The staff at the Animal Rescue League say that after the latest robbery, the shelves throughout the supply area were bare. Hundreds of cans of dog food, hundreds of pounds of dry dog food were taken.
“We have been so blessed. I can’t even tell you how people have come to our rescue and shown us that the love,” Hyde said.
Thousands of dollars worth of cans, bags, treats and more, all pouring in from around the community and even internationally. The outpouring of support has helped them recover, but they’ll need more help to continue their mission and the monetary donations coming in are being put towards new security measures to keep this from happening again.
“And it’s like when something bad happens to you, and then there’s a silver lining,” Hyde said.
