Man sentenced to 5 years in prison after running over woman

learned his punishment after he pleaded guilty to running over a young woman and trying to cover it up. lorenzo pacheco will serve 5 years in a state prison for killing 20-year-old stephanie nicole avelar in 2012. avalar’s family was in the courtroom during the hearing. new at ten … abc-7’s jerry najera spoke with the family. he’s live now … rick estela it was a very emotional day for the avelar family looking for some closure. pacheco will be behind bars but does the crime fit the punishment? “to begin with she was my bab girl’ “she was trying t get her life together”: “goi to school and everything” “she was the littl jokester of the family” robert avelar holds back the tears as he talks about his daughter stephanie. the 20 year old was killed in fabens when she was run over by lorenzo pacheco in 2012. pacheco tried to cover it up by fixing the truck he hit her with. with his family in the backround avelar tells me their life has never been the same “we do anything like we used too. no more christmas together no more new years no more get togethers” pacheco pleade guilty to accident causing personal death. the family tells me they didn’t want to push for a higher charge and go to trial. pacheco had no prior criminal history and there was a chance he could have avoided prison time. “he could of gotten off on probation. that’s what we didn’t want probation” stephanies family is still not happy with the sentence. “a least he’s going to do some time there that’s all we can hope for. hopefully he’ll have fun there” they say 5 years is not enough for a young life taken much too soon. “she was everything to us” 3 years later stephanies brother jeremy is still holding on to her memory. “i spend days alone looking up to the sky cause i know she’s up there and i tell her i love her and i love her but ill never get the chance to hear it comeback to me” i asked the family what pacheco’s response was to the 5 year sentence they tell me he had no reaction therefore – no remorse. an el paso mother who was out on bond after being convicted in the death of her baby
