Council approves resolution for Purple Heart monument at Veterans Memorial Park

Yet another monument is being added to the ever growing Veterans Memorial Park in Las Cruces.

Las Cruces City Council approved a resolution this week accepting $7,000 from the state that will pay for the construction of a Purple Heart monument.

The 4-foot-tall monument reads: “Dedicated to all men and women wounded in all our wars.”

It will go up just west of the garrison flag at Veteran’s Park. ABC-7 previously reported on a huey helicopter planning to “fly” atop the Vietnam Memorial. Construction is expected to start this month. Plans for a women’s monument is also in the works. But members of a local group, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, told the council on Monday this monument is unique.

“Las Cruces Veterans Park does rival any veterans park you’ll find in the country really, normally you have to go to Washington, D.C. to see something like what we’ve been able to achieve here,” said Will Grumet, a member of the group. “There are many monuments there for specific campaigns but there hasn’t been anything specifically for those who have been wounded in combat and bled for the country.”

Installation is expected to start in August and if everything goes as planned, the group hopes to dedicate it on national purple heart day, which is Aug. 7.
