Pedestrian killed was not using crosswalk

UPDATE: The man killed Friday evening after being hit by a truck was not using the crosswalk, according to El Paso Police.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 2100 block of N. Mesa, at University near UTEP.

Police said a 63-year-old man was walking from west to east when he was struck by a 2001 GMC Sierra. The driver, a 24-year-old man from El Paso, was unable to stop and collided with the man.

The 63-year-old man was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

There were no other injuries reported.

The deceased, who is not from El Paso, has yet to be identified. Names are being withheld until the next of kin are notified.

Special Traffic investigators were called to assist in the investigation.

This is the first traffic fatality of 2016, compared to 3 this time last year.

Police are only saying the victim is a man and that no other details will be released until Saturday.
