10 EPISD schools will let out early day before pope’s Juarez visit, start late day after
In addition to closing schools the day Pope Francis visits Juarez, the El Paso Independent School District announced that 10 schools in El Paso’s South Side will have an early release the day before and late start the day after.
The district spokesman said the change in scheduling is for preparations and cleanup.
The schools affected, which are near the Border Highway, will have an early release at 2 p.m. on Feb. 16, and a late start of 10 a.m. on Feb. 18. They include:
• Bowie High School
• Guillen Middle School
• Aoy Elementary School
• Douglass Elementary School
• Beall Elementary School
• Zavala Elementary School
• Jefferson/Silva Magnet High School
• San Jacinto Learning Center
• Hart Elementary School
• Burleson Elementary School
To accommodate the early release and late start, officials said the impacted campuses will add three minutes to the end of the school day from Feb. 1 to June 7.
Heeding the advice of state and federal agencies that had concerns about safety and security concerns, all EPISD schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
The district will make up for the Feb. 17 closure by having classes on Feb. 15, which students, staff and faculty already had off for Presidents Day.
