from our round the clock news team—a fire breaks out at a home in northwest el paso overnight –we’ll have the details. plus—the plans for the hispanic cultural center will be unveiled today –what the city is envisioning for the abraham chavez theater. / sot full “i’ve been around a long time. people have thrown all kinds of things at me and you know i just can’t keep up with it. i just keep going forward.” plus–it’s the last minute push for votes as it’s now less than a week away from the all important iowa caucuses. ” did they seem not to get along? they seemed not to get along but at the same time they’d go off and off and that’s where i was hearing a lot of rumors … neighbors telling abc-7 the man arrested in an unsolved murder case may not have gotten along with the victim…we have the details of what led to the arrest. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. before we get to the forecast–we want to get to our round the clock coverage fro north west el paso … a fire broke out at an abandoned home early this morning. it happened around 2:30 a.m. at 65-72 berringer street. when our round the clock crew arrived on the scene, the fire was already under control. neighbors saw smoke and flames and called 911. no one was inside the home at the time and there were no injuries.. the cause is under investigation. an upper level disturbance will bring cooler weather to new mexico and west texas along high mountain snows and isolated lowland rain showers on tuesday. westerly winds will cause dry weather along with warming temperatures wednesday through next weekend. a deep low pressure system will bring windy conditions next monday. happening today– el paso city council will discuss the future of the hispanic cultural center in downtown. the group behind it just released new images of what it would look like once it’s a complete. but the price has significantly gone up. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with a preview …denise? the sub-committee pushing for the hispanic cultural center wants it to be located inside the abraham chavez theatre. but it’s city council that will make the final call. the initial price tag about 5-point-7 million dollars. but on today’s agenda– a presentation from the museums and cultural affairs department has a total price of more than 36-million dollars. here are renderings released by mcad. director ben fyffe told abc-7 at yesterday’s public meeting this is expected to be a public-private partnership. the 5-point-7 million is coming from the 2012 qualuty of life bonds. the cultural arts center will include a theater, gallery and exhibition spaces large enough for community events. last night’s meeting was meant to inform the public. ben fyffe says the new cost came after the sub- committee wanted more space for potential events. another challenge– more money is need to give the aging abraham chavez theatre much-need upgrades. but he does say– the location is prime: it’s in the heart of the downtown arts district. it leverages relationships with the museum of art, the new childrens museum, with the museum of history, so there’s all these things, and of course the actual theatre of the chavez itself. fyffe says if it is approved– there will be an aggressive fundraising campaign to make up the difference. again it is up to city council to approve today. if council does not approve the site– it could be back to the drawing board for mcad and the sub-committee. and now to the latest on campaign 2016 — and the race for the number one spot: on the republican side it’s trump vs. cruz and on for the democrats, clinton vs. sanders in the 2016 — and the race for the number one spot: on the republican side it’s trump vs. cruz and on for the democrats, clinton vs. sanders in the final days leading up to iowa… the campaigns are striking hard– trying to capture those final votes and win in the first contest for the presidency. abc’s lana zak has the latest from washington. it’s your voice, your vote / pkg the countdown to the iowa caucuses is now being measured in hours… cruz sot “171 hours that’s all we have till the iowa caucuses. ted cruz, seeing his poll numbers slip in recent days, urged voters to turn out. cruz sot “it’s now or never. we can’t get it wrong again.” bu wrong, is what donald trump is saying about cruz, telling supporters the texan should run for prime minister of canada instead trump sot “my new battl is with a gentleman named ted cruz. because, gotta speak the truth. the canadian, the man from canada. and speaking of truth … nats “bernie! bernie! bernie!” on t democratic side, bernie sanders saying what politicians usually don’t– sot bernie sanders “w will raise taxes. yes, we will,” explaining during a town hall in iowa last night how he would fund a single-payer health plan– “we are also going t eliminate private health insurance premiums for individuals and for businesses.” hillary clinton also campaigning on health care in iowa… when i worked on health care back in ’93 and ’94, trying to get us to universal health care coverage. trying to hold on to her 6-point lead in the hawkeye state. president obama will be proposing new legislation that will help more americans save for retirement. president obama will be proposing new legislation that will help more americans save for retirement. new information this morning… administration officials think the plan will give 30 million additional americans access to retirement savings. the president’s ideas will be outlines in the 20-17 budget which he will submit to congress in february. among his ideas — offering tax credits to small businesses that enroll employees in retirement plans; requiring companies to offer plans to part-time workers; and making it easier for companies to bring down expenses by participating in multiple employer plans. the plan would also allow americans to defer taxes on retirement savings. there is now an arrest in a murder case that went unsolved back in december. 41 year-old william john wolff was found shot to death in northeast el paso on december 5th. wolff was an associate professor in the government department at e-p-c- c. under arrest and being held at the san diego county jail are 65-year-old javier arrellano quinones, wolff’s former father-in-law. he’s been charged with murder and interfering with child custody. wollf’s ex-wife & quinones’ daughter, 35-year-old erika wolff is charged with interfering with child custody … and his former mother-in-law, 65- year-old guadalupe quinones, is also charged with interfering with child custody. all three were arrested at a border crossing in san diego. wolff was gunned down more than seven weeks ago outside his brother’s law office on the 42-hundred block of skyline in northeast el paso. el paso police said crimes against persons detectives flew out to san diego on saturday and charged javier quinones with wolff’s murder. enrique quinones: ” this al had to do with custody of the child? that’s correct … he killed him because of the custody battle over the child? well, i’m not saying that … i’m telling you that there was arrest warrants secured for interference with child custody … and the three were arrested on those warrants … the subsequent investigation resulted in quinones being charged with murder … police could not tell us how long wolff’s daughter was out of the country. she is now in the custody of child protective services. we also learned wolff’s ex- wife had a history of violating court orders concerning their child. we brought this as breaking news yesterday on good morning el paso the crash involved several vehicles and sent two el paso county sheriff deputies to the hospital. it happened on i-10 east near the lomaland exit around 5 a.m. on monday. the two sheriff’s deputies were helping construction crews put up road barriers. police say the driver of a semi — disregarded the patrol units striking both of them and another vehicle belonging to a construction crew. the deputies and three construction workers were taken to the hospital. the crash is under investigation. now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… still much more to come here on good morning el paso — flights resumed in the northeast on monday and tons of people flocked to the airports to get where they were going..we’ll take a look. / and later…. american taxi drivers aren’t the only ones upset with uber—how taxi services in france are fighting back against the service. meteorologist krystal klei has your detailed forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
