students can expect to see more officers around campus today after a threat on social media… / a new all girls academy is coming to the borderalnd–we’ll tell you how students are being chosen and when the school is expected to open. “i’m not walking away. i wa pushed away” only four days left until the iowa caucuses and the campaign trail is heating up–we;ll have a preview of tonight’s gop debate and what to expect without the gop front runner. / a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. on your thursday.. before we get to the weather we have an abc-7 traffic alert to tell you about out in socooro. socorro p-d and the el paso county sheriff’s office is on the scene of a four car crash out on soccorro road and vineyeard. we called county e-m-s services and they told our newsroom they were not heading out there so just be aware of this crash it is blocking that intersection. we will let you know when officials have cleared the scene. we start a warming trend today…by saturday we will see our afternoon highs running 10 degrees above average under sunny skies. on monday we will see very strong winds move into the region along with a chance for lowland rain and mountain snow showers. temperatures for the first part of next week will run 5 to 10 degrees below average. there will be a larger police presence at chapin high school today. this ….after a student allegedly posted yesterday that he was going to shoot up the school today on social media. charges are pending against the the 16-year-old male student. without identifying him here is what the post said: they read. … i’m going to shoot up chapin high school tomorrow and if you want the cops to arrest me now i live at blank and when they come i’m going to shoot myself!!! one student is an . i want to kill her tomorrow at school i’m going to stab her and shoot her in the face. can you believe this she thinks its cute but i’m going to kill her tonight and kill her family whether the posts were serious or not, students we spoke at chapin high school yesterday were concerned. / “i think you should def take it serious, you never know what could happen…when youthreaten someone’s life it’s very serious the boy’s father reached out to abc-7 last night. he says his son’s account was hacked. he’s currently trying to get this sorted out with police. in the meantime, police tell us they don’t believe a threat exists. even so they ask people to report any suspicious activity. / the ysleta school district is making strides for girls in the borderland. it’s gearing up to open the very first all- girl and free public school. the young women’s leadership academy will be located what is currently ranchland middle school– in the lower valley. new this morning we’re taking a look at how girls will be chosen. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live to explain … denise? the college prepartory school will focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math. potential students have to write a letter stating why they want to attend. the district is also looking at their current grades, discipline and attendance. “we’ve had a outpouring…can’t find anything like this in our city” malinda villalobos is the principal for the soon-to-be academy opening this fall. she says the college preparatory school is looking for girls willing to take pre- ap and ap courses. abc-7 even got a sneak peek at what the uniforms will look like. the school will eventually house 6th grade through 12th grade girls. yisd is an open district– and the academy is open to any girls across the city. villalobos says economic status is not a factor: “we are not asking… college a all” yisd officials have told us in the past– they want to promtoe the college culture to girls who come from families where higher education isn’t an established tradition. 250 girls will be accepted for the academy’s first class this fall– letters are expected to go out in the spring. testimony in the trial of thomas mcnair is scheduled to continue this morning downtown. he’s accused of taking part in the murder of a man in 2014. on wednesday a detective testified that mcnair confessed and said he killed the victim then burned the body all by himself. the charred body of gerardo luna who was known as “mexican jerry” was found in t basement of an abandoned downtown building. a taped interview of mcnair with police in 2014 was played for the judge without the presence of the jury. detectives pressed mcnair who later said the murder was actually planned by another person who’s also accused with the murder — brittney stewart. and that the other accused all worked together to kill luna and burn his body. mcnair said he didn’t want to be a part of the attack and was forced to slit the victim’s throat, saying in the taped interview quote “i was told i had to do it. i had no choice.” the trial continues this morning at 8:30. a las vegas man who says he was making a political statement—has admitted to vandalizing el paso billboards with drug related messaged. 26-year-old ryan jean accepted a plea deal last week. he was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay restitution of more than 27-hundred dollars. in may of 2014 — jean wrote on an eastside billboard “plata o plomo” — meaning silver or lead. it’s a phrase used by cartels when threatening someone to either give them money — or be killed. jean also hanged some mannequins from the billboard. a shooting that took place over the weekend in berino, new mexico involving a 16 year old man who was allegedly armed with a rifle has been arrested. alberto fierro gamboa fired several rounds at a house party during a verbal altercation between two women. the incident took place on the 100 block of feathergrass. according to dona ana county sheriff’s detectives gamboa shot 2 rounds as the women fled in a vehicle hitting the 34 year old driver in the back. she was taken to university medical center in el paso — was treated and released. meanwhile… all eyes are on tonight’s republican debate in the hawkeye state. the republicans look to clash…without donald trump on the stage. the gop frontrunner… speaking out…on why he’s not attending.. and what he will be doing instead of participating in the debate. abc’s ray ray-mundi explains. it’s your voice, your vote. from tuner 4 donald trump on oreilly factor fnc c 16 012716) sot: 20:18:20: 00 o’reilly: “bu by walking away from the debate, you are not giving them….” trump: i’m not walking away. i was pushed away. i’m not walking away, bill.” o’reilly: “you are walkin away.” trump — defending his decision to skip out on the republican debate on fox news sot @ 20:02:05:00 “i was no treated well by fox. i have zero respect for megyn kelly. i don’t think she is very good at what she does. i think she is highly overrated.” and the go frontrunner’s republican counterparts — pouncing on his decision to be a no show. particularly senator ted cruz an abc-7 traffic alert… there are some road closures that will impact your commute later tonight. every night until friday, january 29… the following will be closed from 8pm to 5am — loop 375 northbound between the north loop overpass and americas interchange — and loop 375 southbound between the bob hope overpass and americas interchange. now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… still much more to come here on good morning el paso—including a new diet secret that could help you lose weight–just by eating this?–we’ll new diet secret that could help you lose weight–just by eating this?–we’ll explain. and later— glass recycling is coming to the borderland–but it’s not as easy as putting it out on the curb for pickup./;/ meteorologist krystal klei has your detailed forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first! and
