a family is left homeless after an early morning fire causes their roof to collapse. what witnesses say on the scene. all of the recently escaped violent fugitives are back behind bars this morning… after a citizen tip leads police to the remaing two. and the first in the nation iowa caucuses are almost here… as presidential hopefuls from both parties scramble to gather last minute support. and andrew j. polk. …stormtrack weather now! let’s get your first forecast with stormtracker iris lopez an anthony family is left homeless after an early morning fire caused their roof to collapse. the fire broke out shortly after one this morning at the intersection of poplar and luisa in anthony texas. firefighters from el paso county , santa teresa, west valley and anthony fire departments battled the fire. neighbors tell abc7 they saw the flames and ran to the house to help out. they tried to put out the fire, but the flames kept growing. that’s when they changed tactics: “we ran up in there and kicke the door down and we took out the old man and we tried to help him.” charlie says he got the elderly man and his dogs to safety. a 14 yr old girl who was also helping was taken to an area hospital with minor smoke inhalation. investigators are at the scene trying to determine what caused the blaze. after a little more than week of searching, a tip from a citizen led police to the two remaining violent fugitives who broke out of a southern california jail. no longer on the run, escaped inmates jonathan tieu and hossein nayeri are back in custody. their 8 days of freedom ended in san francisco when a man spotted tdhe fugitives’ van in a whole foods parking lot near golden gate park. he alerted two police officers. sot- sheriff sandra hutchens/orange county- 02:40-:46 “officers approache the…fled on foot. ” nayeri was apprehende about a block away from the van. a witness describes the arrest. sot-larry gray/witness- :01-:10″the told him to get on the ground ..over there.” jonathan tieu was hiding in the stolen white gmc van, that had been shown on tv stations across the state. police arrested tieu and searched the van. sot- sheriff sandra hutchens/orange county- 03:23-:30 “a number of 380…no weapon was recovered.” tieu, nayeri, and the other escapee bac duong had stayed at a motel in san jose on tuesday and wednesday night. duong returned to santa ana, it’s unknown how, and surrendered friday. the trio escaped from the orange county jail on january 22nd. detectives are still investigating who gave them the tools to break out of jail and assisted them on the outside. noosha ravaghi, the jail’s english as a second language teacher, is accused of helping them with the planning phase. district attorney tony rackauckas says her relationship with nayeri went beyond the classroom. sot- tony rackauckas/oc district attorney- 00-13 “she visited hi several times and developed a relationship with him and it seems to be more than just a casual friendship relationship. and so she started doing his bidding to some extent. orange county sheriff sandra hutchens says the next step is to fix the security lapses that led to the escape of three dangerous inmates. one person was sent to the hospital after being hit by a car. the crash happened last night around 8 o’clock on alameda and snelson. el paso police say special traffic investigators were called to the scene. no word yet on how that person is doing. we’re working on getting more information. we’ll update you as soon as we get it. did university medical center send one a patient home too early? that’s what one family in san elizario says after a fire destroyed their home and injured two family mebrs. now one is struggling to recover. this is video of the aftermath of the fire. abc-7 spoke with the sister of angel carrillo and aunt of jenny carillo, the two victims from wednesday’s fire that destroyed their mobile home in san elizario. she tells us angel was flown to lubbock for treatment of burns across 15 percent of his body… but jenny, with second degree burns on her face and arms and third degree burns to her feet, was released from umc earlier this week and sent home. the family was told she should have never been released in the first place: “they wrapped her up, the covered her wounds, and released her. once i got her home, i tried my best to clean her up and then to clean her wounds. but unfortunately, those types of burns were not for me – i’m not a professional, i’m not a doctor. so the minute she was with me that one day, her face started to – blistering real bad.” the family took the girl to providence, and says with the help of staff and social workers, they were able to get assistance and get her sent to lubbock for burn treatment. we reached out to u-m-c about the situation, but have not gotten a response. it’s been 6 years since the villas de salvarcar massacre. the shooting rampage left 15 people dead in 2010 after gunman sprayed bullets into a neighborhood party. the victims ages ranged from 15 to 20 years old. abc-7’s jerry najera has more the reminder of the violence the city endured. some call this massacre the worst loss of innocent life from cartel battles that took place in juarez. this is a picture of the home now you can see children have covered the walls with their handprints. on january 3oth 2010 family and friends -in a working class neighborhood were celebrating a teens birthday. a little after midnight armed gunman in two trucks blocked off the street and opened fire at three homes. the last house the gunman entered- is where residents were celebrating that special day and a majority of the people were killed. the walls covered in blood and bullets. the youngest victim was a 15-year-old boy. “it must have been scary being in a party celebrating something and then having people come into you house and just shooting at everybody” juarez residents were shocked not even at home people can be at peace-said this woman abc-7 interviewed in 2010. in the following days hundreds of people visited the home calling the acts of murder a travesty. “i just pray to god they give us our juarez back” message echoed by many after the murders. 7 men were arrested in connection with the shooting. those men were said to be part of local drug cartels. this evening friends and family of the victims held a memorial in honor in the victims evan josie. donald trump has given out the first round of money he raised for military veterans this week. he handed out a 100- thousand dollar check at an event in davenport, iowa last night. the money is the first of $6- million that trump says he raised thursday night. the money went to “puppy jake”, a foundation i iowa that raises dogs for military vets. the group says its dogs help the veterans who struggle with p-t-s-d and mobility issues. meanwhile, with the iowa caucuses just a day away, trump is busy urging supporters to vote: presidential candidate) “it all doesn’t matter if you don’t caucus on monday. the polls don’t matter, nothing matters. the only thing that matters is the poll that’s going to be taken on monday.” marco rubio is in iowa, with a similar message. he’s trying to turn supporters into caucus goers. the florida senator stumped at the hilton garden inn to a packed house. rubio talked about the military, border security, and his frustration with the democratic party. he also touched on second amendment rights — saying he would defend the right to protect your family from criminals and terrorists. rubio’s polling in third place in iowa … behind donald trump and senator ted cruz. democrat bernie sanders is also keeping busy. he’s making some of his final pitches to voters in iowa… trying to rally supporters for monday. he told supporters yesterday that his democratic rival, hillary clinton is misleading voters about him. he said he’s “disturbed” the tone of clinton’s campaign… saying they’re saying things about him that just aren’t true” presidential candidate) “th idea that i am attacking planned parenthood when i have 100 percent life time voting record for planned parenthood when i have said over and over again that we should expand funding for planned parenthood and opposing every effort to cut funding, that is just inaccurate and that is just not fair.” clinton criticized sanders for calling planned parenthood “the establishment” and she slammed his gun control record. the latest bloomberg politics – des moines register poll shows them in a statistical dead in iowa. then two presidential candidates got important endorsements just in time for the iowa caucuses. the new york times announced its editorial board endorsed hillary clinton for the democratic presidential nomination. ohio governor john kasich received the board’s endorsement for the republican presidential nomination. the times said it picked clinton over her top rival, vermont senator bernie sanders, due to her experience and policy ideas. the times said kasich got the nod because he is the only plausible choice for republicans tired of — quote — “th extremism and inexperience on display in this race.” preparations for the pope’s visit continue in juarez. abc-7 reporter julio-cesar chavez visited the choir which will be singing at the pal mass, just meters from the man himself. he brings us this story. singing the coro monumental, the monumental choir, has been prepping to meet pope francis for months. david moreno “it’s the firs time that the pope comes to this city, juarez, and people is really grateful.” only the very best made the cut to sing at the pope’s mass. the hundreds of singers are from all over the borderland. saturday’s rehearsal included the singers from juarez. the rest will join the group next week. estefania vargas “hemos estad ensayando hasta cuatro, cinco horas… this choir singer says they have practiced up to four or five hours a session, but that in the end it will all be worth it. singing choir directors say the singers are very dedicated. jennifer mercado “they have a lot of disposition and are ready to go.” it’s easy to
