Las Cruces Mayor not concerned about possible state government shutdown

Governor Susana Martinez rejected a $6.1 billion budget brought forward by lawmakers this past Friday, and if an agreement isn’t reached, she is threatening to shut down state government.

Monday, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima told ABC-7 it wouldn’t have much affect on the city. “We really don’t rely on state funding too much other than some road improvements,” Mayor Miyagishima said.

The mayor estimates less than $1 million from the state is used for city projects every year.

While the city wouldn’t be greatly affected, its the public school system Miyagishima is worried about.

“It’s very dire there in the schools, they’re very concerned whether they’ll still have their jobs whether or not they’ll continue,” he said.

Miyagishima said he plans on holding an summit sometime in April for members of the public regarding concerns for education funding.
