NMSU softball takes both games in doubleheader vs. UTEP
The New Mexico State softball team beat UTEP twice Tuesday evening to improve to 12-16 overall.
NMSU won game one by a final of 8-4, then went on to crush the Miners 13-4 in the second game, which was shortened to five innings.
The Miners are now a mere 8-23 on the season after the two losses.
The Aggies got off to a quick 3-0 start through two innings in game one. UTEP would later rally and come within one run of the Aggies at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
But NMSU responded in the top half of the seventh thanks to Amy Bergeson, who drove in two runs with a triple and then scored on the same play after a UTEP throwing error to help the Aggies to an 8-4 win.
In game two of the evening, UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the first, but that was very short-lived. NMSU then tallied nine runs in the top of the second to open up a 9-1 edge over the Miners. Nikki Butler capped off the nine-run inning with a two-run blast, her third home run of the year.
NMSU would not let up the rest of the night, eventually cruising to a 13-4 win.
The Aggies ended up outscoring the Miners 21 runs to just eight in the two games combined.
NMSU will begin WAC play on March 31 at 6 p.m. at home against Utah Valley.
UTEP, meanwhile, will resume its conference slate on April 1 at noon on the road against UTSA.
