Vigil held in Las Cruces for victims in Charlottesville attack
Residents organized a vigil in Las Cruces Sunday in response to the weekend’s events in Charlottesville, VA.
State Rep. Bill McCamley, D-Las Cruces, helped organize the event, which was held at the Plaza de Las Cruces.
“It’s important that we as a community come together and say that, no, being a Nazi and in the KKK is not right and not normal,” McCamley said. “What we heard from our President is not what we needed to hear.”
James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, is accused of running his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman and injuring at least 19 others.
Fields will make his initial court appearance on Monday.
The Facebook event for the vigil encouraged people to, “Come together in peaceful solidarity to say NO to White supremacy. Southern New Mexico supports Charlottesville.”
