100 new school buses are now taking Las Cruces students to and from events

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico- This spring semester, STS bus drivers are enjoying new rides to bring Las Cruces Public Schools students to and from events.

The general manager of STS Buses of New Mexico, Van Wamel, told ABC-7 that they recently purchased 100 new school buses.

Wamel said that the buses cost around $100,000 each.

The new school buses all have air conditioning, an intercom and multiple cameras inside the carriage.

Many light bulbs have been replaced with LEDs that do not need to be replaced as often.

Another new feature to the special education buses is that the car seats are now built into the actual seat.

The built-in car seats mean the district will not need to purchase extra car seats for each bus rider.

"The 100 new buses we bought we pay for them outright then as the year goes on, it's called a rent and lease program through the state and we get paid back monthly for the buses," Wamel explained.

The general manager at STS New Mexico said that they are down 20 drivers from what is generally on staff.

If you are interested in being a driver for STS, their number is 575-523-5686.

Wamel told ABC-7 that they start at $15 an hour plus benefits.
