WATCH: El Paso County Sheriff’s Detention Officer rescues family from burning trailer home
EL PASO, Texas -- An off-duty El Paso County Sheriff's Detention Officer saved a family from a burning trailer home, according to the Sheriff's Office.
In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office says the incident occurred on June 19 around 9:30 p.m. on the 3900 block of Vanderveer in far east El Paso. Officer Daniel Cardenas was on his way home when he noticed a large fire engulfing a trailer home.
A deputy called to the scene witnessed family members attempting to enter the trailer home to secure religious items.
According to the Sheriff's Office, by the time Cardenas was running up to the fire, he noticed two females standing inside the burning trailer. Cardenas - wearing only athletic attire - quickly ran inside to help them get out, and assisted in saving some of the items they wanted.
He returned to the trailer home soon after helping the two females to help their mother and father escape.
Once everyone was safe, Cardenas told the family "lo material se recupa, la vida no," which translates to "you can recuperate material, but not your life."
