Migrants embrace first steps in the U.S.

EL PASO, Texas -- ABC 7's got special access to an area where migrants turn themselves in. Migrants on the other side of the border traveled from Venezuela and Peru.

One couple traveled from Bolivia with their 6-month-old son.

Edwin traveled with his partner Maya. He says everything he's done is all for his 6-month-old son. He wants a good life for himself that's why he came here.

Maya said they were being persecuted in Bolivia. She said they lived in fear. It's one of the reasons they traveled to the U.S. But more than anything they made the journey for their son.

Many migrants were seen crossing the freezing Rio Grande barefoot.

Edwin said the journey was hard. They traveled by bus. He says they arrived that's what's important.

He says he had doubts he would make it this far, but he was happy when they finally opened the door.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection continues apprehending migrants at the border.

An estimated 2,500 are coming into El Paso daily. This amounts to 75,000 migrant crossings every month.

Numbers are expected to climb once Title 42 is lifted on December 21. It is estimated to bring an average of 150,000 migrants through El Paso in a single month.
