San Elizario ISD to transition to a 4-day week in the upcoming school year
SAN ELIZARIO, Texas (KVIA) -- San Elizario Independent School District will transition to a four-day work and school week in the 2023-2024 school year.
On Wednesday, in a 4-1 vote, the SEISD Board of Trustees voted to approve the four-day week schedule.
The district will be the first in the El Paso region to implement this schedule. 41 school districts across the state of Texas are already operating on a 4-day week.
SEISD officials are eager for the upcoming change.
According to officials, the district continues to experience increased vacancies.
"Every student deserves to be taught by a qualified teacher, and the four-day week will continue to set SEISD apart by recruiting and retaining district employees and prospective individuals who find this schedule appealing," Superintendent Dr. Meza-Chavez said.
District officials believe the change will help retain current employees and recruit future employees.
According to the superintendent, the change will benefit all parties involved.
"The four-day week also creates a space for students and staff to take care of social, emotional, and physical wellness by having that extra day in the week to make that their focus."
In the next months, SEISD officials will work on adjusting and finalizing the upcoming calendar.
District officials told ABC-7 the work week will run Tuesday through Friday.
Officials said Mondays are a better day to remain off because most federal holidays fall on Mondays.
The new school year will start on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
