Juarez mayor addresses scheduled lifting of Title 42 next week

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- With the upcoming lifting of Title 42, currently scheduled for May 11, officials on both sides of the border say they have been in constant communication with one another. In a Monday news conference, Juarez Mayor Cruz Perez Cuellar mentioned he has been speaking with El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser.

Many local and national officials in both the United States and in Mexico fear that the lifting of Title 42 will lead to a potentially unprecedented migrant surge. Juarez and El Paso officials, however, both believe their cities will only be used as waiting areas by those migrants, and that the surge should not have a long-term effect on the Borderland.

Juarez officials say they are still in talks with the federal government of Mexico to get funding for a new shelter in the Anapara area. That area is incredibly close to the border and officials believe setting up a shelter in that area will attract the migrants, who will likely only stay in Juarez for a day or two.
