Borderland florists see increased demand for Mother’s Day celebrations
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Borderland families celebrate Mother's Day twice in the same week and they are causing a boom in floral sales.
“It's very, very stressful. Probably more so than Valentine's Day," said Ray Flores, owner of Magical Moments Flowers.
"People just love their mothers dearly," said Irma Delfin, owner of Heaven Sent Florist.
Mother's Day is celebrated twice in the borderland. Once on Mexican Mother's Day, May 10th. And then again, on American Mother's Day, celebrated the second Sunday of May.
"We have people coming in and out and of course, orders come in. We have to stop at a certain point to take orders," said Delfin.
"So pretty much, you know, it's like a double-double whammy," said Flores.

"The rush is over, but we've been here since 4:00 this morning," said Flores.
"It's always busy. It's always busy. We have a lot of walk-ins that come and pick up anything. Sometimes some people say, I'll just take anything. I forgot. How you can forget your mother? I don't understand. But we have business booms. Mexican and American Mother's Day, they just boom," said Delfin.
Some florists experiencing stress beyond the influx of business.
"You know, we had a delay in our shipment with some of the flowers. You know, you know, with the airports and the airlines and stuff and everyone's going crazy. So we did, we had a delay this morning, but we were able to manage. And of course, we got hit pretty heavy with a lot of walk-ins," Flores.
Despite the hectic workload Borderland florists enjoy being part of such a memorable day. They hope to continue helping El Pasoans celebrate their moms every Mother's Day even if it is twice a year.
