Best practices for tire safety, staying safe on the roadways
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Over the weekend, one person died after being struck on I-10 near Raynolds. According to first responders, initial reports indicate a man suffered a tire blowout, and left his car to inspect it when he was struck by a car.
To ensure your tire safety AAA has some tips you can follow:
- Make sure to properly inflate your tires to the correct pressure.
- Check the tire pressure often, AAA says low tire pressure results in poor handling, braking and reduced gas mileage.
- Check the tread depth. They say a good practice is to determine if a tire is worn out is to place an upside-down quarter in a tire tread. If you can see the top of George’s head, it’s time to replace the tire.
- Rotate your tires regularly.
- Know the tire’s age, as a tire ages, its rubber becomes hard and brittle, losing elasticity and strength. The older a tire, the higher the risk for failure.
- Check your trunk, make sure you have a spare tire, and keep it properly inflated.
