El Paso shooting victims from Mexico make public plea for help

The tragic shooting at the Cielo Vista Walmart may have been six weeks ago, but one family from Mexico remembers it like it was yesterday.

“We are very sad,” said Oliva Rodriguez in Spanish. “Because our lives changed forever.”

She told ABC-7 that she and her husband, Mario de Alba, were shot on that Saturday. Mario remains in critical conditions, his wife said.

“My future depends on God,” Rodriguez said. “I am convinced because the day of the shooting, the three of us walked away while all of those around us were dead. I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life.” ​

Rodriguez said she was shot in the finger and chest, requiring surgery. She told ABC-7 that the United States government covered much of the cost, but she is not aware of the total financial burden to her family. She said the Mexican Consulate supplied money for three months’ rent.

The family will have a fundraiser at Coco Miel from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
