D.A. to proceed with domestic violence charge against El Paso city Rep. Sam Morgan
EL PASO, Texas -- The El Paso County District Attorney's Office late Friday signaled that it intended to a prosecute an El Paso City Council member recently arrested for alleged domestic violence.
District 4 Rep. Sam Morgan is accused of assaulting his wife on Oct. 4; he was arrested after his wife called police claiming he hit her across the face.
Prosecutors on Friday formally filed their assault case against Morgan. There was no immediate comment from the parties involved.
However, since the incident occurred, Morgan's wife has filed for divorce and Morgan was removed from his role as the city's alternate mayor pro-tem by his fellow council members, who are also considering whether to censure him.
Officers described Morgan's wife as "terrified" and suffering from redness and swelling to her face when they arrived at the couple's home on the morning of the alleged assault. Police also said they heard Morgan racking of an unknown type of firearm in a bedroom and arrested him a short time later with a handgun tucked into his waistband.
"We’re all entitled to due process," Morgan said at a recent council gathering. "No one knows what I’m going through. I love and support my family. I represent northeast El Paso, and will serve them until the end."
