EL PASO, Texas -- It's getting colder in the Borderland, and it's the season of switching from an air conditioned home to a heated one. Texas Gas Services wants to remind residents there are several things to remember to stay safe as you make the transition.

A spokesperson for the company said it's important not to use your oven as a source of heat. If cost is a concern, and using an oven feels like a good way to save money, there are other avenues and resources for you to explore to do so. One of them is through Project Bravo.

The company also recommends being aware of abnormal smells when you turn your heater on. Gas should not smell like rotten eggs, and if that smell is present, leave the premise immediately and call 911. The company also highly recommends installing a carbon monoxide monitor.
