EL PASO, Texas -- City/County Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza made the following key points below about the coronavirus outbreak during an appearance before El Paso County Commissioners Court on Monday...

  • El Paso hasn't hit its' peak given the continued rise in cases.
  • Very concerned about Mother's Day, fears gatherings will fuel a spike in cases, urges families to forgo in-person celebrations.
  • A lot of El Paso nursing homes have had virus cases, but no clusters have been seen as yet.
  • Commended the sheriff for doing a good job of minimizing virus risk at the county jail.
  • Mobile testing sites in more rural county locales will be operating soon.

Also during Monday's meeting...

  • County Judge Ricardo Sameniego said local businesses were helping to ensure compliance with the county's mandatory face covering mandate.
  • Ascarate Park workers have had a hard time enforcing social gathering rules, especially during the evenings, so Commissioners voted to close the park earlier during the summer.
  • Emergency management head Jorge Rodriguez said more than 1,000 virus tests have occurred to date in the county and there are roughly 500 active cases currently. He said 84 citations have been issued for violating county health mandates.
