SANTA TERESA, New Mexico -- A motorcyclist from Mexico died after being struck by an SUV in Santa Teresa on Tuesday morning.

The New Mexico State Police on Wednesday identified the victim as Francisco Zavala, 24, of Juarez

The deadly crash happened where the Pete V. Domenici Highway intersects with McNutt Road just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said Zavala's motorcycle was stopped at a red light at the intersection when it was struck from behind by an SUV that failed to stop.

Zavala was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene, state police said, and two other vehicles that were also stopped at the red light were damaged in the crash.

Investigators on Wednesday said it was still unknown why the SUV failed to stop, but they indicated alcohol did not appear to be involved.

State police did not release the name of the SUV driver, but did identify him as a 23-year-old Texan from Canutillo. It was unclear whether the man will face any charges stemming from the fatal collision, but police said it remained under investigation.
