MESQUITE, New Mexico -- A mobile home was destroyed by fire Sunday night leaving a family homeless, but authorities said fortunately there were no injuries.

The blaze in the 400 block of N.M. Highway 192 in Mesquite broke out about 8:45 p.m., and nearly 20 firefighters from Doña Ana County and the New Mexico State University Fire Department responded to battle it.

When those fire crews arrived, Battalion Chief Kellen Tarkington said they saw smoke and flames coming from the mobile home - 25% of which had already been consumed by the blaze.

Despite efforts by firefighters to put the blaze out, the mobile home was a total loss. The family who lived in the mobile home is reportedly staying with relatives.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Tarkington said.
