Doña Ana County records 20% of New Mexico’s 173 new virus cases
SANTA FE, New Mexico — Health officials in New Mexico reported 173 additional confirmed Covid-19 cases on Monday with one additional death.
That raises the state’s totals to 11,982 confirmed cases with at least 493 known deaths. The lone new death occurred in San Juan County, in the northwest corner of the state.
Doña Ana County recorded 20% of the state's new cases, with 35 additional infections to raise their tally to 929. The county's death toll remained at nine, following a death that had been reported on Sunday.
Only Bernalillo County, which is metro Albuquerque, reported more new cases Monday than Dona Ana. It had ten additional for 45.
Otero County in southwest New Mexico had three new cases on Monday, which brought them to a total of 41 among residents. But there were no new infections reported at either the county's prison or ICE detention facility, where outbreaks have resulted in hundreds of cases so far during the pandemic.
The actual number of infections throughout New Mexico is thought to be higher than the official data because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
Below you can see county-by-county data for virus cases and deaths across New Mexico. The data comes from Johns Hopkins University, so the numbers may sometimes vary a bit from what's reported by the state health department.
