Federal government sending over $300 million to communities dealing with migrant crises for humanitarian support
(KVIA) -- The Emergency Food and Shelter Program's National Board is allocating $332.5 million to 35 communities dealing with a migrant surge. It's being called part of the DHS's multi-agency plan to manage the surge of migrants expected with the lifting of Title 42, currently scheduled for May 11.
The first round of funding is going to border communities like the borderland. Several interior cities will then get funding. Chicago, New York, and Atlanta are on that list. DHS is also planning to spend about $360 million in additional funds this fiscal year from the Shelter and Services Grant Program.
The City of El Paso is set to receive $22 million. The County of El Paso will get $17.5 million. The United Way of Southern New Mexico and Doña Ana County are getting $28 million.
