Migrants continue to get processed near U.S./Mexico Border as the end of Title 42 nears

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- As the expiration of Title 42 looms, migrants continue to turn themselves into Border Patrol agents near Gate 42 in El Paso's lower valley.

ABC-7 witnessed dozens of migrants being loaded into the Border Patrol vans. Agents said 1,500 migrants were waiting to be processed into the United States.

The group included men, women, and families from different countries, especially from Venezuela.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said starting tonight people who arrive at the border without using a lawful pathway will be ineligible for asylum.

Mayorkas said they have 24,000 Border Patrol Agents and Officers at the Southwest Border.

"Do not believe the lies of smugglers. The border is not open," Mayorkas said.

He also said those who enter the country illegally are subject to tougher consequences, including a five-year ban and potential criminal prosecution.

The secretary said the country had been preparing for this date for two years.

ABC-7 was able to visit Sacred Heart Church where only a few migrants remain.

One family said they left Venezuela and embarked on a 7-year journey to the U.S. seeking a better life.

They said they came in search of more opportunities to help their daughter who was born with Down syndrome.

The family said they presented themselves to CBP and were released. They said their court date is later this month in Chicago, but have no means to get there.
